Responsible AI Design Challenge

hosted by AI4Users

Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence through Design for Accountability and Intelligibility

Are you interested in artificial intelligence?

Are you interested in design?

Are you interested in the responsible application of technology in everyday life?

Then the Responsible AI Design Challenge is just right for you!

Responsible AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications can increase the efficiency and quality of processes across sectors including public services. However, their inner workings can be incomprehensible making it hard to explain how they transform data inputs to outputs. This is known as the “black box” problem which can impede the involvement of humans in shaping, operating and monitoring the use of AI in service delivery. The AI4Users project addresses the “black box” problem contributing to the responsible use of AI for the digitalisation of public services.

The Challenge

In this design challenge, the context is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems in public service organizations. You will work on a fictitious case in which a system is supposed to help caseworkers in their daily work within a public service organisation. Your task is to design a system to help the caseworkers with their decision-making process and explore how AI can be meaningfully integrated into it. The design challenge can be approached from different perspectives. For example, you could focus either on the interface or data - based on your interests and skills.

Date and Location

The design challenge is divided into two parts. First, there is a remote phase where participants will gain access to the task and material. The teams can familiarize themselves with the design challenge and sketch possible solutions. This phase is very open without any restraints. The second part of the design challenge is a two-day in-person event. On the first day, the teams will focus on prototyping and testing their solution. Prototyping can be as simple as paper-based sketches or wireframes, or you can liberate your coding skills and program a functional prototype. No limitations here. On day two, the teams pitch their ideas to the committee and audience. Three winners will be announced at the end of the day, and prizes will be handed out.
